ELECTRICAL SAFETY DIRECTOR

G.A. West & Company has an opening for the following director-level permanent staff position in Creola, Alabama: Electrical Safety Director. The applicant will be tasked with the continuous improvement, updating, and oversight of the overall Electrical Department Safety Program.


These responsibilities shall include but not be limited to the following:
 

  • Designation of competent persons to manage the Electrical Safety Program (ESP).
  • Overall monitoring of the Electrical Safety Program, including the policies, procedures, and controls to mitigate electrical hazards such as shock and arc flash.
  • Overall support and management of training means, methods, and documentation required for “qualified persons” and “unqualified persons” within the craft workforce.
  • Overall monitoring of Electrical Safety Program requirements along with fields audits and inspections for correct practice compliance.
  • Overall monitoring of the flash arc training and other training specific to the Electrical Department.
  • Overall monitoring and training required for the Electrical Department safe work practices.
  • Interpreting electrical safety requirements.
  • Approving energized electrical work permits.
  • Assessing and prioritizing actions to correct non-compliance.
  • Ensuring the use of appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE), tools, and test equipment.
  • Electrical near miss and accident investigation and mitigation.
  • Continuous improvement planning and implementation, including employee skill and knowledge enhancement.
     

The selected person in charge must be qualified and knowledgeable. Useful credentials and qualifications would include:

  • Demonstrated skills and knowledge: As a “qualified person”, they must demonstrate skills and knowledge related to the construction and operation of electrical equipment and installations.
  • Advanced training: Completion of advanced training courses in NFPA 70E standards and requirements, often designed for supervisors and managers.
  • Certification: While optional, a relevant certification such as the Certified Electrical Safety Compliance Professional (CESCP) from the NFPA demonstrates advanced knowledge.
  • Work experience: Verifiable work experience with electrical power systems is crucial for understanding real-world hazards.
  • Engineering or safety background: Applicant in this role should hold an Electrical Engineering degree, or be a Certified Safety Professional (CSP), or Certified Health and Safety Technician (CHST), supplemented by extensive electrical safety experience.
